At CrossFit, our focus is on functional fitness. Here are pictures of three athletes at the top of their game. We post these pictures to show the wide range of what people consider "fit" and "healthy". We pose the question, "Which of these athletes will be most adaptable to the widest range of physical challenges?" Further, "What if the challenges were random and given without any warning or prep time at all?"

Michael Rasmussen, Tour de France Cyclist

Greg Amundson, CrossFitter extraordinaire

Ronnie Coleman, Bodybuilder 8x Mr. Olympia
Outside Magazine crowned triathlete Mark Allen “the fittest man on earth” in 1997. I can't believe the general public holds long distance athletes in such high regard. To me, professional triathletes, cyclists, marathon runners, etc look thin and sickly. If someone trains only in long distance events, they are training in only 1 of the 10 physical skills (exclusively endurance). The other 9 skills (stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, balance, accuracy and agility) are not only ignored, they decrease. I would think that "the fittest man on earth" would excel in a wide range of athletic activities.
ReplyDeleteAs for bodybuilders, they train using isolation exercises for the singular goal of making their muscles look big, decreasing their functional ability. If you want to be truly fit, train using functional fitness. Appearance should be the consequence of fitness.
Greg, the CrossFitter, is definitely my champion.
At my level 1 cert in SD I had the pleasure of meeting Greg A. Not only was he a nice and inteligent person but he was a "Beast". Greg did a police triathilon a while back and finished 5th...pretty good, but here's what was impressive. He only trained for the triathilon by doing the crossfit com. WOD's, no extra endurance training, and for the bike portion of the event he used a MT bike knobby tires and all.
ReplyDeleteJust think, if they would of added some kind of strength component to the triathilon he would have smoked everyone.
If you get a chance take a look at some of the exercise demo's w/ Greg A. in them, check out the 20 Tabada push-ups for all 8 sets its impressive.
....by the way, men should NOT wear SPEEDO's I don't care how buff you are...it looks funny!!!
